How I came about wanting to garden.

So It's been a little over a year since we had the back lawn removed by "Food not Lawns" and I can't tell you how much pleasure this garden has given me.

This whole idea actually started when we lived in Marin County and I had heard of people growing food to eat. I thought this sounded like a lot of work and figured that this was just for the expert farmer. We lived in apartments most of my life so this never entered my mind. There was a fig tree that I have fond memories of, when we lived in an apartment in Hollywood when I was a kid. This is probably why I love figs to this day. When we finally rented a house, I tried growing watermelon. A bit ambitious come to think of it. When we moved back to Los Angeles, the idea stuck in my head. I started reading about how our food is produced and how many miles it usually travels to get to my plate. I had heard of a family in Pasadena who decided that growing a lawn was too much of a waste. They figured why not grow something edible if they are going to spend the water on it. This family now grows most, if not all of their produce in their backyard, and their backyard isn't even that big. They also make a living by selling some of their produce to local restaurants.
When I was little, I don't think I had ever seen anyone growing anything edible in their yards, so this was amazing to me. The idea of growing food in my backyard started sounding better the more I read about it.
Then we bought a house and I was excited to start a garden. I didn't know much about this so I started reading gardening books. I actually started with a drought tolerant garden in the front. My husband was not too sure he wanted me experimenting with our front yard at all. I have to admit it did take me years to establish this garden.
